Plants of the African Savanna

Baobab Tree (Adansonia digitata)
The Baobab Tree is known as the "Tree of Life" because it can live for thousands of years. It has a thick trunk that stores water, which helps it survive the dry seasons of the savanna. Baobab trees produce large, white flowers that open at night and big, nutritious fruits called "monkey bread." Many animals, including elephants and baboons, love to eat the fruit and leaves of the Baobab.
Sausage Tree (Kigelia africana)
The Sausage Tree gets its name from the large, sausage-shaped fruits that hang from its branches. These fruits can be over a foot long and are often eaten by animals like baboons and elephants. The tree has beautiful, dark red flowers that open at night and attract bats for pollination. The bark, leaves, and fruit of the Sausage Tree are also used in traditional medicine by local communities.

Acacia Tree (Acacia spp.)
Acacia Trees are common in the African savanna and are easily recognized by their flat-topped shape and thorny branches. They have small, feathery leaves and produce yellow or white fluffy flowers. Acacias are very important for the ecosystem, providing food and shelter for many animals like giraffes, elephants, and ants. Some species of Acacia have developed a special relationship with ants, which protect the tree from herbivores.
Elephant Grass (Pennisetum purpureum)
Elephant Grass is a tall, fast-growing grass that can reach up to 10 feet high. It grows in dense clumps and provides excellent cover and food for many savanna animals, especially elephants. This grass is very tough and can withstand the harsh conditions of the savanna. It’s also used by people for making thatch roofs and as fodder for livestock.
