Explore Papua New Guinea

Geography

Papua New Guinea occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, while the western half is part of Indonesia, known as Papua and West Papua provinces. This division occurred due to historical colonization, with Papua New Guinea gaining independence from Australia in 1975, while the western half remained under Indonesian control. The island's split has resulted in diverse cultures, languages, and governance systems between the two regions.
