Animals of the Congo
African Forest Elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis)
African Forest Elephants are smaller than their savannah cousins and live in the dense rainforests of the Congo. They have rounder ears and straighter tusks, which help them move through thick vegetation. These elephants love to eat fruits, leaves, and bark, using their trunks to grab food. They play a crucial role in the forest by spreading seeds from the fruits they eat, helping new plants grow.
Bonobo (Pan paniscus)
Bonobos are great apes that look a lot like chimpanzees but are smaller and more peaceful. They live in the forests of the Congo and are known for their strong social bonds and playful behavior. Bonobos walk on two legs more often than other apes and use tools to get food. They eat a variety of fruits, leaves, and small animals, sharing their food with others in their group.
Okapi (Okapia johnstoni)
Okapis are unique animals that look like a mix between a giraffe and a zebra, with a long neck and striped legs. They live in the dense rainforests of the Congo and are very shy and secretive. Okapis use their long tongues to reach leaves and buds high in the trees. They are important for the forest because they help spread plant seeds as they move around.
Western Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla)
Western Lowland Gorillas are large, gentle apes that live in the rainforests of the Congo. They have dark fur and big, strong arms for climbing trees and knuckle-walking on the ground. These gorillas eat fruits, leaves, and insects, spending much of their day foraging for food. They live in family groups led by a dominant male called a silverback.
Pygmy Hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis)
Pygmy Hippos are much smaller than their larger relatives and live in the forests and swamps of the Congo. They have round bodies and spend a lot of time in the water to stay cool. Pygmy Hippos are shy and solitary, coming out at night to feed on leaves, roots, and fruits. They help keep their habitat healthy by spreading seeds through their dung.
African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus)
African Grey Parrots are known for their amazing ability to mimic human speech and sounds. These intelligent birds live in the rainforests of the Congo and have beautiful grey feathers with bright red tails. They eat fruits, nuts, and seeds, using their strong beaks to crack open hard shells. African Grey Parrots are social birds that often gather in large flocks.
Leopard (Panthera pardus)
Leopards are powerful and adaptable big cats that live in various habitats, including the forests of the Congo. They have beautiful, spotted coats that help them blend into the forest. Leopards are excellent climbers and often drag their prey into trees to keep it safe from other predators. They hunt a variety of animals, from antelope to monkeys.
Giant Pangolin (Smutsia gigantea)
Giant Pangolins are covered in large, protective scales made of keratin, the same material as human nails. They live in the forests of the Congo and use their long, sticky tongues to catch ants and termites. Pangolins can roll into a ball to protect themselves from predators. They are important for controlling insect populations in their habitat.
